Large wood salad bowl made from Black Walnut.  A delight to hold and touch, this capacious bowl can be used to hold salad, snacks, fruit, bread, remote controls, keys, or knickknacks.

It can also be purely decorative.  The two black beads on the upper outside rim add an elegant touch while also providing a bit of texture making it easier to hold.  It will look terrific on an entryway table, a sideboard, a coffee table, and anywhere that you want to make a design statement.

It will also make a much-appreciated gift.

This unique bowl is artisan-made in a one-man shop in NJ, not in a factory and not overseas.  It is truly custom made.

The bowl measures about 13-1/4" wide by 4" high and weighs in at only 1 lb. 14 oz, which is lightweight given its size.

The finish consists of linseed oil and beeswax which lend a silky-smooth touch.  If the finish ever needs touching up, simply apply a very light coat of food-grade oil and/or natural beeswax.  Buff it off with a soft cloth and you are ready to go.

100% of the net proceeds from the sale of this bowl will be donated to a children's education charity.

Your tops can be customized with your choice of colors.  Maybe you have a favorite color, or you want school colors.  Sports fan?  Team colors!  Just let me know what you wish.

Mini holiday trees. For Christmas, Hanukkah, or just to create a festive ambience.  These cute little trees are made of the cutoffs from the other larger projects.  Nothing is wasted.  Therefore, you will see a variety of timbers, colors and sizes.  The photos capture little trees made from black walnut, maple, ash, American Osage Orange, spalted maple and cedar.  While these are random, they can be made to your specifications of size, color and species.  A matching set?  No problem!  Want to simulate a wild forest?  Easy peasy!

Besides being used as display, you can give them as gifts, or you can use them as a decoration on a present.

SKU 20003 Price: $10 each for the large; $10 for 2 of the small.  Shipping included within the US.

Weeping cherry bowl.  Yes, it is made from a beautiful weeping cherry tree that a neighbor had to take down.  They were kind enough to share the timber with me. The grain and patterns of this bowl are striking.  The profile is modeled after classical works that I have seen in museums.

The bowl measures about 8" by 3".

It can be put to a variety of uses but because of its unique nature and beauty, I would treat it as a show horse, not a work horse, and use it for dry items only.

The food-safe linseed oil and beeswax finish gives it a soft, silky feel and its light weight adds to its aura of elegance.

Spatulas, stirrers and spurtlesMade from a variety of timbers, including American Osage Orange, Ash, Beech, Cedar, Maple, and Black Walnut.   Each spatula is different, with some being about 6" long, while the majority are about 12" long and anywhere from 1"-2" wide.  Each is decorated differently: some have a bead, some have a charred groove, and some have no decoration at all.  In addition, some are not really spatulas but stirrers,  and others what the Irish call a spurtle.  Also, unlike commercially made spatulas, all of these have a round handle and top for comfort in the hand.  When ordering, please communicate any preferences, if any, otherwise a selection will be made on your behalf.

Walnut bowl with crushed soapstone infill.  Black walnut is the king of American hardwoods, the most expensive of the domestic timbers.  This piece had some naturally occurring voids that presented me with the opportunity to enhance the wood.  I chose to clean and fill the voids with some soapstone that I crushed into the consistency of coarse sand.  The coarseness lends some texture to the infill that complements the dramatic figure of the wood.

The bowl measures about 5-1/4" by 3".

It can be used purely as display, or it can be used to serve nuts, candies and other dry food items.  It can also be used to hold jewelry, keys, knickknacks. and odds-and-ends.  Additionally, its elegance makes it an ideal gift.

It is hand-finished with non-toxic linseed oil and beeswax which give it a sheen and lustre as well as a very smooth touch.

SKU 22003.  Price: $40 including shipping within the USA.

Two catalpa bowls.  The timber for these bowls comes from Penn Yan, in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.  The catalpa tree has large, heart-shaped leaves and seed pods from 8 to 20 inches in length.

The timber is relatively soft yet stable.  The high-contrast grain lends a bit of flair to these bowls which can be used for snacks, fruit nuts and other food items.  They can also hold keys, yarn, or general knick-knacks.  Each will also make a much-appreciated gift.

The first bowl measures 8-1/4" by 2-1/4", while the second bowl, with the black color inlaid into the rim, measures 11" by 2-3/4".

They are hand-finished with non-toxic linseed oil and beeswax which give them a sheen and lustre as well as a very smooth touch.

Prices: $70 for the bowl without the black rim (SKU 21030); $75 for the bowl with the black rim (SKU 22238); $130 for the pair.  Prices include shipping within the USA.

Black walnut bowl with alabaster infill.   I was delighted to find this piece of wood because it was heavily stressed.  Besides the sheer challenge of turning a piece of wood like this, all the naturally occurring voids, splits and knotholes gave me the opportunity to fill them with alabaster stone that I crushed by hand.  It's a time-consuming process but I love the high contrast that results.  It serves to memorialize the eventful life that the tree lived.

This elegant bowl will look great on a mantel, a bookshelf, or an entryway table.  It would also serve as a vessel on a dresser to hold jewelry, as well as craft items or odds-and-ends.  Wherever you display it, it is sure to draw comments.

It measures about 7-1/2" wide by 2-1/2" high and weighs a little over 12 ounces.

Beautiful Ambrosia Maple Bowl.    A lovely, practical bowl with a myriad uses.  Finished with a food-safe coating, this bowl can be used for dry food items, like snacks, candy and chocolate, as well as jewelry, keys, knick-knacks and craft items.   It would also look terrific as decoration on a bookshelf or table, and it will be sure to draw comments.

It measures about 7" wide by 3" high.

Black walnut bowl with live edge.   This bowl was turned to completion when the timber was still green and fresh.  In general, the drying process is unpredictable and as this bowl dried the shape changed from geometrically circular to the organic shape that you see in the photos.  Sometimes a bowl like this splits irreparably as it dries.  In this case, the bowl developed some superficial cracks but maintained its integrity.  A gamble worth taking!

It will look great on a bookshelf, a mantle or a coffee table.

The bowl measures 8" wide by 6" high.  It is finished with linseed oil and beeswax.  The timber for this bowl came from Penn Yan, NY.

Toy car with baby blue wheels.  Because life isn't just about wood bowls (though it may feel like it sometimes!).  I started making these cars when my grandsons were 2 and 4 years old and living half-way across the country.  They loved playing with them and even loved just carrying them wherever they went.  Surprisingly, they never lost one.  The two-old, however, washed his in the toilet, so my preconceptions of personal hygiene went out the window, along with his car which I replaced with a new one.

The car is finished with a clear, water-based acrylic, while the wheels are finished with a water-based acrylic paint.   There is no metal in the car, just wood, glue and finish.

Also available in Pink, and Blue-and-Pink.

With a little care, this car could be an heirloom.  My grandsons still have theirs and they treasure them.

Gorgeous Black Walnut bowl with alabaster infill.  The shape of this bowl was inspired by classical designs.  It has a smooth, flowing exterior with a slight flare at the rim.  I took advantage of the naturally occurring voids by filling them with alabaster stone that I crushed by hand.  Frankly, it was lot of work, but the resulting interplay of light and dark is worth it.  It reminds me of trees growing in the mountains, clinging to the rocky outcrops.

This beauty would grace any bookshelf, mantle or end table, as well as looking spectacular on a dresser.

It measures about 5-1/2" wide by 2-3/4" high and weighs only about 4.8 ounces.

Rustic cherry bowl, perfect for dry items like chips, nuts and snacks, or as a centerpiece.  When a bowl is shaped while the wood is still green and wet, as it dries it changes shape in unpredictable ways.  Only Mother Nature can say what the end result will be, and like this bowl, it is certainly unique.   It is finished with several coats of walnut oil which have penetrated the surface of the wood, creating a nice sheen and some protection.   It measures about 7-1/2" wide by 2-1/2" high.

Black walnut bowl with maroon infill.  When I started to work this piece of walnut, it was my good fortune to discover that there was a void on the side that I could use to enhance the bowl's appearance.  I chose a maroon fill because it is in the same color family as the cream and chocolate hues of the timber.

It's a petite bowl at 4-1/2" by 2-1/4".

It is finished with non-toxic linseed oil and beeswax.  This lends it a satiny touch and a soft sheen.

The bowl can, of course, be used purely as an ornamental display.  It can also be used to serve dry food items like nuts and candies.  It can also hold jewelry, keys and other small items.

SKU 22218.  Price: $25 including shipping with the USA.

Two-toned cherry bowl with turquoise-colored inlay.  This striking bowl has a pronounced grain pattern that is tamed somewhat by the symmetrical inlaid rim.  Nevertheless, the strong character of the wood shows through. Wherever you place this bowl in your home, its high-energy will draw attention and comments.

As pictured, it would make a wonderful receptacle for jewelry, as well as for odd-and-ends, keys, etc.  Of course, it would make a wonderful decorative item on your coffee table, in your entry way, and on a bookshelf.  Anyone would be pleased to receive this as a gift.  Especially if it were filled with candies!

I finished the bowl with several coats of linseed oil.  The oil was applied and burnished by hand over the course of 3 days, then I repeated the process with a linseed oil and beeswax combination.  It was a lot of work but it provides a nice sheen, a warm touch, and some protection to the wood.  It was worth the effort.

It measures about 5-1/4" wide by 2" high.

SKU 22060.  Price: $55 including shipping within the USA.

Maple bowl with turquoise-colored dots.  This is a fun but elegant bowl that is both beautiful and useful.  There are four turquoise-colored dots deeply inset into the broad, flat bead at the rim.  The color of the dots harmonizes with the rich golden hue of the maple while simultaneously providing some contrast.  The rim also allows the hand to more securely hold the bowl, avoiding spills of whatever precious contents you may choose, whether it is pearls, rings, or dark chocolate!

Imagine this gem of a bowl as an unusual display piece on a bookshelf, a mantle, or an end-table.  It would also serve nicely as a vessel for (more!) candy or other items of your choice.  Of course, it would make a wonderful gift, one that would be sure to be appreciated.

Toy dump truck, all handmade.  Another toy that I began making when my grandsons were 2 and 4 years old.  They have proven to be very popular because they are not plastic and not designed to be throw-aways.  I think children and parents like the tactile sensation of the warmth of the wood and the feel of solidity.

Children are very creative and will find a myriad of uses for this truck.  They will play with something like this longer than they will with a toy that has a single purpose.  For example, they will fill the truck with little stones, Legos, and other small parts.  (I originally filled my grandsons'' with chocolate rocks.)  They will make a garage from blocks or boxes and park the truck inside.  And, of course, they will then knock the garage down, then rebuild it, endlessly.  They will also stuff things through the cabin window, whose edges have been rounded and smoothed to protect their little fingers.

There is no metal in the truck, just wood, glue and a food-safe finish.

The truck measures maximally 9-1/2" long by 5" high by 2-3/4" wide.

With reasonable care, and a little luck, this truck could become an heirloom.  My older grandson has already said he wants to keep it for his children.

SKU 20007.  Price: $38 including shipping within the USA.

Heirloom quality, old fashioned logging truck.  I designed and made the original of this truck for my two grandsons when they were 1 and 3 years old.  The boys were "energetic" so the truck has some heft to it with the intention of making it more durable.  Intending to make it safer, I made it without any metal whatsoever, thinking that if it were to be broken, at least there wouldn't be any screws or nails exposed.

This truck proved to be so popular that later on Mom requested a second one in order to reduce the competition over the first.  (Hah!)  While making the second truck, I made a few more at the same time, including this one.

I was surprised at the creative play they developed.  They would of course, run the truck around the room, banging it into things on the floor.  They made a garage for the truck with some books and cardboard boxes and used the logs for a roof.  They took special delight in knocking the garage down with the truck. And they were fascinated by putting the logs through the cabin window, one after the other. They were enthralled by it, and it was very calming.

This toy has all the makings of an heirloom: home-made, encourages creativity, will never go out of style.

The truck and logs are finished with linseed oil and beeswax.  If needed, it can be refreshed with food-grade oil and/or beeswax.  If it ever needs repair, contact me to discuss.

Oh, and the littlest grandson demonstrated with his truck that the logs can float in the bathtub.  I don't recommend doing that.

Now that the boys are a little older, they are already planning on taking their trucks with them to college.

The truck measures about 10" long by 7" high by 4-1/2" wide, and weighs about 4 lbs 1 oz.  It comes with 12 logs.  Replacement logs are available.

Charming black walnut bowl with alabaster infill.  I was fortunate to find this delightful piece of timber with naturally occurring voids which I filled with alabaster that I crushed by hand.  It really makes the colors and figure pop.

It measures a petite 3-1/2" by 1-1/2" and is finished with a combination of linseed oil and beeswax.  It's small enough to fit on even a crowded bookshelf where it will add elegance.  It will also look terrific on a nightstand or dresser where it could hold jewelry, keys, pills or trinkets.  Of course, it will make a thoughtful, and appreciated gift.

Rustic green bowl.  Made from red oak, I coated the exterior with two coats of authentic milk paint.  (Milk paint is an all-natural, non-toxic paint that has been used for thousands of years.) The exterior of the bowl has a coarse texture due to the natural minerals used as pigment in the milk paint.  It lends a tactile experience to handling the bowl and gives it the rustic appearance.

I applied 3 coats of the paint, and then three coats of linseed oil and beeswax to both the interior and exterior.

The bowl measures about 5-1/2" wide by 2-1/2" high.  It weighs about 5 ounces.
