Maple bowl with blue infill

This beautiful maple bowl with the distinctive blue infill was made from a piece of timber that had a shallow surface void.  The naturally occurring dark patterns bracketing it suggested that I use the void to make a design statement.  I chose a blue infill to contrast with the cream and brown tones of the timber itself.  Fortunately, I was able to retain the organic flow of the outline of the void so that it preserves the integrity of the overall grain and spalting.  Sometimes I think it looks like vaguely like birds, other times it reminds me of the paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.  Regardless, this is a very elegant bowl, and one that cannot be duplicated.

It measures about 7" by 2 3/4".

The bowl is finished with a linseed oil and beeswax combination with give the surface a soft and velvety tough as well as a subtle sheen.

It will look at home on a bookshelf, an end table, or a mantle.  Of course, it would make a wonderful and much appreciated gift.  It is truly a unique piece.
